South West Adventure Tours are designed to give first- time visitors an overview of the Southwest National Park, the Styx valley and Mount Field National Park. Many roads in this region are non-sealed causing concern with hire vehicles. The following is one example of tours available. Day tour: Go west from the base and immediately enter the rainforest. Leave the bitumen world behind and allow the four wheel drive to excel. Effortlessly cruise along the Florentine road seeking the turn-off to Mt Tim Shea. Select low range and ascend the steep and challenging four-wheel drive section below the summit. Emerge into the alpine vegetation with panoramic 360 degree views of wild Tasmania. Be awed by the mountain vistas, the forest canopy below, mist in the valley and eagles soaring inquisitively overhead. Have a cuppa and take in the view. Follow the Gordon River Road (probably the best scenic road in Tasmania) to the junction at Scotts Peak road. This earthen road leads you into the heart of the southwest national park. Views abound of Gondwana rainforest, mountains, mist and glorious sunshine. Take a short walk through the myrtle dominant rainforest. Climb a section of track towards mount Anne and take in the panorama overlooking Lake Pedder. Ascend to the Red Knoll lookout with expansive lake and mountain views. Have lunch and connect with the ancient land. Escape into the state forest to discover the tallest hardwood trees on the planet (the redwoods in California are softwoods). Follow tracks through the cool temperate rainforest constantly craning your neck at the impossible height of the canopy. Feel the sensory explosion of incredible sights, lush, fresh, organic smells and the sounds of the river, the breeze through the trees and the constant chatter of birdsong. Priced around $350 per car. ½ day tour. Select either the Styx valley and mount Tim Shea, or a trip out to the Red Knoll lookout. Priced around $150 per car. Transport Bushwalkers requiring transport into Scotts Peak Dam or to Mt Field National Park or anywhere in between may book what is essentially a bush taxi service. Priced around $80 per car.
